A large number of people avoid going to a dentist for the sheer fear of having to be in a dental chair. Sedation dentistry allows us to help people keep their dental anxiety, fears and apprehensions at bay and receive proper dental treatment. It involves the administration of prescription medications that induce a state of calm and help a patient go through their dental procedures with comfort and ease.

Below are a few of the many benefits offered by sedation dentistry:

  • It helps in getting rid of anxiety
  • Sedatives have minimal to no side effects
  • It allows for complex procedures to be completed in a single dental visit
  • It is perfectly safe
  • No needles and pain involved

Different sedatives may induce different levels of sedation. We offer Nitrous Oxide sedation at our practice. Nitrous oxide, also known as laughing gas, is a colorless gas with a sweet smell and can produce mild to moderate sedation effects. Nitrous oxide is given to a patient by mixing it with oxygen and allowing the patient to inhale it via a mask placed over the nose. The amount of sedation can be controlled during the procedure. Patients report feeling light-headed and happy under the effect of the gas. Once the procedure is over, nitrous oxide is switched off and the patient is allowed to inhale only oxygen for a while.

Local Anesthesia

Local anesthesia is administered at the site of the treatment to numb the nerves so that the patient does not feel any pain during the procedure. It is generally given by means of an injection. A topical anesthetic may be applied before giving a person an injection of local anesthesia to eliminate the pain of the needle. You may need painkilling medication once the anesthesia wears off after the procedure.
